The magazine Punch was critical of the decision to allow competitive football to continue after the outbreak of war. Mr Punch is depicted saying to the footballer "No doubt you can make money in this field, my friend, but there's only one field today where you can get honour".

The 1914–15 season was the 44th season of competitive football in England.

Overview

The 1914 Charity Shield was not contested due to suspension of football during World War I.^{[citation needed]}

Events

• Suspicious patterns of betting on the game between Liverpool and Manchester United led to allegations of match fixing and the 1915 British football betting scandal. Eventually seven players (three from United, four from Liverpool) were banned from football.
• Tom Watson, Liverpool's manager for the last 19 years, died on 6 May 1915.^[1]

Notes:

1. Derby County, Preston North End and Arsenal were promoted to First Division after WW I, as the number of teams in both divisions was expanded to 22.
2. The official Football League records originally showed Birmingham in 5th place and Arsenal in 6th place. In 1975 it was discovered that an error in the calculation of Goal Average had been made and the table was corrected.
3. Glossop failed to be re-elected to the Football League, never to return again, and Stoke were elected in their place at the Football League's AGM in 1915. In March 1919 Coventry City, South Shields, Rotherham County and West Ham United joined the Second Division.^[2]

Rules for classification: The system of using goal average to separate two teams tied on points was used up until the 1976–77 season. The points system: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for losing.

Goalkeeper Skilly Williams played every game for Watford.
