История освоения гражданами или субъектами Российской Федерации , Советского Союза , Российской империи , Царства Российского и других государств-предшественников России составляет значительную часть истории России , а также истории мира . Имея площадь 17 075 400 квадратных километров (6 592 850 квадратных миль), Россия является крупнейшей страной в мире , охватывая более девятой части суши Земли . Во времена Советского Союза и Российской империи доля страны в мировой суше достигала 1/6. Большинство этих территорий были впервые открыты русскими исследователями (если не считать коренные народы населенных территорий). Непрерывное освоение Евразии и строительство заморских колоний в Русской Америке были одними из основных факторов территориальной экспансии России.
Помимо открытий на Аляске , в Центральной Азии , Сибири и северных районах, окружающих Северный полюс , российские исследователи внесли значительный вклад в исследование Антарктики , Арктики и островов Тихого океана , а также в глубоководные и космические исследования.
