Sandy Reed (c. 1921 – February 7, 2004)[1] was a track announcer with Ascot Park in Gardena, California, and the Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California.[2] He was in several movies, including Richard Rush's 1967 film Thunder Alley,[3] the 1968 Elvis Presley film Speedway,[4] and Fireball 500.[5] He narrated an LP record that used audio clips, as well as interviews, to highlight the then-ascendant career of Riverside's home-track favorite, Dan Gurney.[6]
About 70-80 persons, including fellow track announcer Bruce Flanders and track photographer Earl Scruggs, attended the 11:00 a.m March 6 memorial service at a church in Pasadena for long-time Ascot track announcer Sandy Reed, 83. The popular voice at race-tracks and in many racing movies passed away February 7 from a massive stroke in an Arcadia hospital. Sandy's second wife, Suzy, was the widow of Sandy's fellow track announcer Scooter McLean at Riverside International Raceway for many years.
